My Point of View on the importance of Point of View

Earlier this evening I had an epiphany that is going to greatly shape my point of view. In thinking about how this new idea is going to impact my life, I started thinking about my career and life path.

I’ve always thought I wanted to go into film or television. I wanted to make shit that entertained people. More specifically, I wanted to make cartoons because this medium allows me to incorporate the most of my abilities (cartooning, writing, music, voices etc) and to have the most control. However, I matured from wanting to make things, to wanting to make things and entertain people. Later in life, the strongest incentive to wanting to go into mass-communication was (and still remains) to express my point of view and share ideas and thoughts with many people. Essentially, using my views on things to entertain people (though the perks of successfully doing so are also attractive).

I continue to shape my point of view (which I don’t feel like explaining in this post). People have always asked me, “do you want to be a writer?” My answer was “No. I write. But only as one express ideas.” I am more of an “idea”er I guess. The medium is unimportant. These are just methods of communicating ideas to a mass audience.

Too often, people will define what they do and what they want to do by the medium. “I want to be a filmmaker” “I want to produce television” etc. This is a flawed and problematic way of thinking. It’s like saying, “I want to have a megaphone.” You shouldn’t have a megaphone unless you have something to say, something to communicate.

True communicators have a point of view to express, and television, magazines, film etc. are just effective ways of communicating this. With the glorification and rewards (fame, money etc) of the being in mass communication, many people go into these professions with selfish motivations, and what we all end up with is more noise and less signal.

The objective is no longer to communicate ideas, but to garner attention, wealth or both. A lot times, these creations are wrapped up in superficial quirkiness or esoteric nonsense that is really just a way of hiding the emptiness underneath. In fact, I usually find that the more bizarrely dressed-up something is, the less it actually says. This is true with my own creations. I can make some weiiiird shit because I’m a weird guy, but generally, this is because I have less to say in that creation. This is a very direct post, because I have very much to communicate.

Personally, I don’t like Wes Anderson for this reason. His films are pretentious and don’t really say anything. The true objective for his movies seems to be to decieve people into thinking he’s brilliant. In my opinion, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” was a much less entertaining and important film than say…”Bruno.”

However, superficially interesting filmmakers like Wes Anderson inspire many to become “filmmakers.” Not because they have something to say, but because they want the attention and lifestyle of these filmmakers.

Of course I enjoy films that say nothing but are just very entertaining and stimulating like a stupid comedy or action movies, but I guess what makes them more tolerable is that generally the people behind these films don’t pretend to be brilliant.

People shouldn’t aspire to want a megaphone, or the ability to mass communicate, unless they really have something to contribute to others. Don’t aspire to be a great filmmaker, or a great writer, or a great television producer or famous blogger or whatever. Aspire to have great thoughts and ideas to communicate, then, go out and do it.

I know this sounds ridiculous coming from “cartoon penis,” especially with all the nonsense I spew on this blog (which is sort of just me exercising my brain). But, I do have a real point of view and I try to contribute something interesting, even it’s retarded.

I can be really stupid sometimes. As a right-brained, disorganized, attention-span deficient person, I’m prone to some painfully embarrassing brain farts.

Socially and Professionally, I deal with this by being honest, self-deprecating, and irreverent. After all, we’re all human and we all make mistakes.

What I can’t stand are the idiots who take themselves too seriously, people who are also mistake-prone, but can’t own up to it or are in denial of their own ineptitude. These people are the REAL idiots, because they’re either insecure or lack self-awareness, and are always placing blame on other people.

These people can suck it.
